Iomega NAS Case study
|
| Data Management Business Brief |
Managing storage growth Mimco, Inc., a division of Magna International, was beginning to face some serious data storage challenges. The accounting department wanted Jacob Choy, manager of IT, to allocate more network space for their growing files. At the same time, one of the company's servers dedicated to a customized Lotus Notes application was filling rapidly with email and attachments; soon its users would be facing a storage crunch of their own.
It was a familiar situation for Choy. He was used to working with users to archive their old email (although he always ended up having to add storage to his servers anyway). He had also successfully encouraged some departments to manage their own Notes servers. He had even investigated the addition of a small SAN (storage area network). However, when the new requests came in, he was ready with a simpler and more cost-effective solution: the Iomega Network Attached Storage (NAS) server. |

  |
| A smarter storage solution |
| Choy's group decided to purchase two Iomega NAS P400u servers. He dedicated one to the Accounting NT server and split the other between Notes (NT) storage and Novell "hot backups." The attraction? "Adding an Iomega NAS server was cheaper and quicker, and it installed without disruption," said Choy. "The Iomega NAS servers use hot-swappable drives so I can change them easily down the road. And I know Iomega supports its products." |

| The word is getting around |
| Now that the new Iomega NAS solution is in place, Mimco's accounting department and Notes users are happy and Choy is looking at NAS applications in other Magna divisions. "I'm sometimes the Magna start-up man, so IT people know me and they some see what I'm using." Do they like what they see? "Definitely, because with Iomega NAS, technology is serving the user without them realizing it," said Choy. "Users aren't interested in changing their habits; they want a solution that serves their needs. Deploying a NAS server was a way to keep our networks responsive and let people get on with their jobs without hassling them about their storage usage." |
